Now the beginning of Patiala peg is from an exciting real story of Maharaja’s polo team. Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala had a Polo team, which was winning during his reign. Members of his army consisted of traditional warriors of Punjab. Their popular pastime was skull pegging. The heads of their enemies buried nearly into the ground, they lifted the skulls by pegging them with their spears as they rode their horses, rider, and horse intoxicated with ‘bhang’. The cultured version of the game came to be recognized as ‘Tent Pegging'. It was a fearsome Maharaja's handsome reward for a fine performance and dire punishment for the loser that made the Patiala team world tent-pegging champions. It was in the Patiala's attitude to invite the ‘Viceroys Pride’, for a friendly battle in the Maharajas township.

The ‘Viceroys Pride’, all were Irish men, powerful in their march, were the aggregates that would drink till the night’s end and were still capable and cool to walk perfectly.
When the ‘Viceroys Pride’ entered Patiala for a friendly match battle, the Patiala's team felt anxious and feared that if they lost the tournament, it would be their head on which there Maharaja would peg his highway. So a scheme was planned.

In the daytime, they ran into the friendly match of the tent, their heads were heavy and drunken. While they were sipping, the pegs used for tent pegging were replaced with shorter ones for the ‘Viceroys Pride’ and the larger ones for the hometown team. The main purpose of the plot was to defeat the match.
Furious by the loss, the political representative of the viceroy went up to the maharaja to complain. The maharaja replied " Yess, in Patiala our pegs are larger.
